EHS Program Highlights
Infant Mental Health Initiative, 2000 - 2003

The Infant Mental Health (IMH) Initiative was developed in response to the October 2000 Administration on Children, Youth, and Families (ACYF) Infant Mental Health Forum to maintain a sustained focus on this important issue. The EHS NRC has engaged a broad spectrum of multidisciplinary experts, program staff, training and technical assistance providers, researchers and parents in the development and dissemination of follow-up activities.

Publications from this initiative include:

Pathways to Prevention: A Comprehensive Guide for Supporting Infant and Toddler Mental Health
Order print copies through the Head Start Information and Publication Center

Zero To Three Bulletin, July 2004, Vol. 24, No. 6, Mental Health Consultation to Infant-Family Programs: The Early Head Start Experience. Order print copies of this publilcation through the ZERO TO THREE Press.

The Pathways to Prevention training experience
Twenty-five EHS and MSHS programs (two from each region and program branch) participated in the Pathways to Prevetion training experience. Each program was assigned a specialized infant mental health consultant to work with the program over the course of a year. Programs developed work plans that outlined the goal(s) their program wished to address through participation in this initiative. Goals addressed one or more of 3 areas: staff knowledge and skill development; enhanced systems critical for mental health services; and enhanced capacity of the community to address mental health needs. Progress towards goals was tracked and documented at the local program level and across programs.
